“ " What Is Truth ? ” by Bertrand Russell
نویسنده
چکیده
An early three-volume technical work written with A. N. Whitehead sought to prove that the fields of mathematics could be derived from logic. The anecdote is told by G. H. Hardy 1 where Russell reported he dreamed that Principia Mathematica, his three-volume massive study, was being weeded out by a student assistant from library shelves two centuries hence. About the work.. .. In the chapter "Truth and Falsehood" in his Problems of Philosophy, 2 Russell advances the " correspondence " theory of truth. On this theory, truth is understood in terms of the way reality is described by our beliefs. A belief is false when it does not reflect states-of-affairs, 1. An American pure mathematician known for his toast, " Here's to pure mathematics, may it never find an application. " (Most of Hardy's theoretical studies, as things turned out, found applications.)

The Rise of Post-truth Populism in Pluralist Liberal Democracies: Challenges for Health Policy
Recent years have witnessed the rise of populism and populist leaders, movements and policies in many pluralist liberal democracies, with Brexit and the election of Trump the two most recent high profile examples of this backlash against established political elites and the institutions that support them. This new populism is underpinned by a post-truth politics which is using social media as a...
متن کامل“Stop, You’re Killing us!” An Alternative Take on Populism and Public Health; Comment on “The Rise of Post-truth Populism in Pluralist Liberal Democracies: Challenges for Health Policy”
Ewen Speed and Russell Mannion correctly identify several contours of the challenges for health policy in what it is useful to think of as a post-democratic era. I argue that the problem for public health is not populism per se, but rather the distinctive populism of the right coupled with the failure of the left to develop compelling counternarratives. Further, defences of ‘science’ must be te...
متن کاملA Critique of Deflationism
The past century has witnessed two types of philosophical debates over the concept of truth. In the first, substantive, type of debate we find rival theories of truth put forward that seem to have, and whose proponents have taken them to have, significant metaphysical and epistemological implications. An early example of this type is the debate in the early 1900s between the British Idealists (...
متن کاملAn Argument for a Phenomenological Pragmatic Conception of Truth
Correspondence theories of truth claim that truth involves a relationship between ideas in the mind and facts in the world, but because minds are viewed as being disconnected from the world, there is no way to determine whether beliefs are true or false under the correspondence view. For truth to be a meaningful concept, a theory about it must conceive of it in a way that is meaningful for huma...
متن کاملSpecial Bertrand Curves in semi-Euclidean space E4^2 and their Characterizations
In [14] Matsuda and Yorozu.explained that there is no special Bertrand curves in Eⁿ and they new kind of Bertrand curves called (1,3)-type Bertrand curves Euclidean space. In this paper , by using the similar methods given by Matsuda and Yorozu [14], we obtain that bitorsion of the quaternionic curve is not equal to zero in semi-Euclidean space E4^2. Obtain (N,B2) type quaternionic Bertrand cur...
